Perkins's performance as Norman Bates in Psycho is widely regarded as one of the greatest in horror cinema. The American Film Institute ranked Norman Bates as the second-greatest villain in film history, behind only Hannibal Lecter. Perkins was one of the first American actors to win the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award, a mark of his international recognition. His Golden Globe win for Most Promising Newcomer signaled his early promise, and his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard commemorates his contributions to motion pictures.
