Mackie's career is marked by a rare combination of indie credibility and blockbuster stardom. He is one of the few actors to have won an Independent Spirit Award early in his career and later headline a billion-dollar franchise. His role as the new Captain America made him the first Black actor to carry the shield in a solo film, a historic milestone. He has been recognized by the NAACP Image Awards multiple times for his work in both film and television. In 2022, his hometown of New Orleans gave him a Key to the City for his philanthropy and representation of the city.
