Tarkovsky's place in cinema history is extraordinary. In the 2012 Sight & Sound critics' poll, three of his films, Mirror, Stalker, and Andrei Rublev, appeared among the 100 greatest films of all time, a feat matched by only a handful of directors. In the directors' poll, Mirror ranked No. 9. Cahiers du Cinéma placed Mirror at No. 3 on its 2008 list of the 100 greatest films. He was voted the world's greatest director in a 2010 Guardian reader poll. His influence is so profound that the Moscow International Film Festival now gives out an Andrei Tarkovsky Award. These honors reflect not just his technical mastery but his ability to create cinema that feels like a spiritual experience.
