Anatomy of a Fall

In the winter of 2022, a novelist named Sandra Voyter sat in her mountain chalet near Grenoble, answering questions from a student journalist. Upstairs, her husband Samuel blasted 50 Cent's P.I.M.P. at full volume, drowning out the interview. It was a small act of aggression, a signal of trouble beneath the surface. Hours later, Samuel was dead on the snow, his skull fractured from a fall. Sandra became the prime suspect.

Directed by Justine Triet and co-written with Arthur Harari, this French legal thriller won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2023 before earning five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller. Shot in the Savoie region of the French Alps, the film unfolds almost entirely inside a courtroom and a chalet, using claustrophobic spaces to mirror the characters' trapped emotions. With a budget of just €6.2 million, it grossed $36 million worldwide, a rare crossover hit for a subtitled drama.

Hüller plays Sandra with a controlled intensity that never tips into melodrama. She is sharp, guarded, and fiercely intelligent, a woman who knows how words can be weapons. Eleven-year-old Daniel returns from a walk in the woods with his dog Snoop to find his father Samuel lying dead in the snow outside the family chalet. The fall from the attic window appears to have been fatal. Sandra, Daniel's mother and Samuel's wife, says she was inside working and heard nothing. The local prosecutor opens an investigation.

As the police reconstruct the scene, contradictions emerge. Samuel's blood spatter suggests a struggle. A bruise on his head could indicate he was struck before falling. Sandra's fingerprints are on a glass near the window. The autopsy reveals an unusual amount of aspirin in Samuel's system, consistent with a prior suicide attempt months earlier. Yet the prosecution argues Sandra drugged him, then pushed him.

The trial becomes a public dissection of Sandra and Samuel's marriage. Friends and colleagues testify about their volatile dynamic: Samuel's resentment over Sandra's literary success, her affair with a woman named Marge, his guilt over Daniel's blindness, a condition caused by an accident years ago when Samuel forgot to pick Daniel up from school. The prosecution plays a recording of a violent argument between the couple, captured on Samuel's phone the day before his death. In it, Sandra mocks Samuel's ambitions and threatens him. The courtroom listens in silence as the two tear each other apart.

Daniel, who is visually impaired, takes the stand. He is forced to relive the day of his father's death and confront the possibility that his mother is a murderer. His testimony becomes the emotional core of the trial. The defense, led by Sandra's old friend Vincent Renzi, argues that Samuel's death was either an accident or suicide. Vincent points to Samuel's depression, his stalled career, and his growing isolation. But the prosecution paints Sandra as a cold, manipulative woman who killed her husband to free herself from a failing marriage.

The film weaves between the courtroom and the chalet, using flashbacks to show moments of tenderness and cruelty in the marriage. Sandra's guilt or innocence is never clear.
