América de Cali

América de Cali, often called América, is a Colombian professional football club based in Cali. Founded in 1927, its roots trace back to the América Football Club of 1918, making it one of the country's oldest teams. The club competes in the Categoría Primera A, Colombia's top division, and plays home matches at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero, a historic venue. With 15 league titles and a second division championship, América is among Colombia's most decorated clubs. Internationally, it reached four Copa Libertadores finals, including three straight from 1985 to 1987, but never won the tournament. It did claim two international trophies: the Copa Simón Bolívar in 1975 and the Copa Merconorte in 1999. The club's fierce rivalry with crosstown Deportivo Cali fuels the Clásico Vallecaucano, while other major rivals include Atlético Nacional, Millonarios, and Santa Fe.

Despite its success, América faced a historic setback in 2011 when it was relegated to the second division for the first time. The team spent five seasons in the Primera B before returning to the top flight after winning the 2016 championship. In 1996, the IFFHS ranked América as the second-best club in the world, behind only Juventus. It also ranks as the best Colombian club of the 20th century and holds the 32nd spot in the IFFHS all-time world club rankings, the highest for any Colombian team. América de Cali was officially founded on February 13, 1927, though its origins date to an earlier América Football Club formed in 1918. The club quickly established itself in Colombian football, winning its first league title in 1979. Under the guidance of manager Gabriel Ochoa Uribe, the team dominated the 1980s, capturing five championships between 1982 and 1986. That era also saw América reach three consecutive Copa Libertadores finals (1985–1987), losing each time to Argentinian sides. The club added two more league titles in 1990 and 1992, and another in 1997, before a period of decline.

Relegation in 2011 was a crushing blow, but the club rebuilt methodically. Led by manager Jersson González, América won the 2016 Primera B title, securing promotion. Since returning to the top flight in 2017, the club has been a consistent contender, reaching the 2024 Apertura final. The club's all-time leading scorer is Antony de Ávila, with 207 goals in all competitions. América's youth academy has produced talents like Carlos Valderrama, who played for the first team in the early 1980s before moving to Europe.[edit]
