French new-age project Era released their self-titled debut studio album in June 1996, introducing a sound that fused Gregorian chants with modern electronic beats. Composer Eric Lévi produced the record and arranged the tracks, blending orchestral arrangements from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with rhythmic percussion and synthesizers. The album features twelve tracks exploring themes of spirituality and ancient mysticism using Latin lyrics derived from liturgical texts rather than traditional religious dogma.

Vocalist KyOresu provides the ethereal chant-like quality central to the album's identity, particularly on the track commonly known as Ameno. While the single climbed charts across France, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, and parts of Latin America, the full record achieved multi-platinum status globally. Critics praised the innovative synthesis of sacred choral music with contemporary dance rhythms, highlighting the atmospheric textures and seamless integration of classical instruments with electronic foundations.
