Amazon Prime Video began as Amazon Unbox, a digital video download service launched in September 2006, and rebranded as Prime Video in 2011. It is owned by Amazon.com, Inc., the multinational technology company founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994. The service operates as part of Amazon's worldwide digital entertainment business, alongside Amazon MGM Studios and the ad-supported Freevee platform.

Prime Video offers a subscription video-on-demand library of thousands of movies, TV series, and Amazon Originals. It is bundled with Amazon Prime membership, which costs $139 per year or $14.99 per month in the United States, or available standalone for $8.99 per month. The platform also provides individual title rentals and purchases through the Prime Video Store, add-on channel subscriptions to third-party networks such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, and live sports broadcasts including NFL Thursday Night Football, Premier League soccer in the UK, and NBA and WNBA games as of 2025.

Prime Video's original programming, produced through Amazon MGM Studios, includes critically acclaimed series like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, Reacher, and Fallout, as well as films such as The Big Sick and Air. The service is available in over 240 countries and territories, with localized content and language support in markets including the UK, Germany, Japan, India, Brazil, and Australia.
