Ron Howard directs Alone at Dawn, a war drama based on the 2019 nonfiction book by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz. The film chronicles the life and final mission of Master Sergeant John A. Parallel to the battlefield action, the film weaves in a timeline set years later. An intelligence officer investigates the circumstances surrounding Chapman's death and the subsequent controversy over his posthumous recognition. The third act involves a relentless struggle to hold the summit against a brutal assault. The audience witnesses Chapman's transformation from a tactical expert into a symbol of unyielding resolve.
