All I Want for Christmas Is You
by Mariah Carey
Merry Christmas · 1994 · 4:01
About This Song
Mariah Carey sat down at a small keyboard in August 1994, the room decorated with a tiny Christmas tree and the film It's a Wonderful Life playing in the background. She was trying to capture the feeling of a classic holiday love song, something that would feel timeless. Working with co-writer and co-producer Walter Afanasieff, she wrote the melody and lyrics quickly, then they recorded it at The Hit Factory in New York City. To get into the spirit, Carey had the studio decked with ornaments, candles, and Christmas trees, and kept the air conditioning cranked.
The track opens with thirteen sparkling notes that sound like a music box or a snow globe being shaken. Then Carey launches into an a cappella-style verse before the full arrangement kicks in: jingling sleigh bells, chimes, sweeping strings, and a joyful piano line. Her voice soars through the chorus, declaring that she doesn't care about presents under the tree, all she wants is her loved one. The song is pure Christmas pop with R&B and soul touches, built on a buoyant, nostalgic foundation that nods to Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and classic girl groups.
Released on October 29, 1994, as the lead single from Merry Christmas, it didn't initially chart on the Billboard Hot 100 because it wasn't sold as a commercial single. After chart rules changed in 1998, it finally appeared on the Hot 100 in January 2000 at number 83. It took until December 2017 to break into the top 10, then hit the top five in 2018, and finally reached number one in December 2019. Since then, it has returned to the top spot every holiday season through 2024, logging a record 21 total weeks at number one, the longest run atop the Hot 100 for any song in history.
