Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction
"Three factions. One planet. No base building."
Overview
Released in July 2003, Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction brings the brutal clash of three species to the Xbox and PlayStation 2 via a real-time strategy lens developed by Zono. Fox Interactive and Electronic Arts co-published this title, which skips the usual base-building and resource gathering found in most games of its genre. Players instead focus entirely on unit management and direct combat across three distinct single-player campaigns. Each path offers unique mechanics for the Xenomorphs, Predators, or human marines, drawing heavily from established film and comic lore without feeling repetitive.
The action unfolds on LV-742, a desolate world serving as a hunting ground for the Predators while hiding a massive Alien hive. Human colonists arrive unaware of the danger, only to find themselves caught in an escalating war between the two predators. The game received mixed reviews upon release, with critics praising the faithful adaptation of the franchise but noting the limited strategic depth compared to contemporaries like StarCraft. Despite these criticisms, the title remains a notable entry for fans who wanted to control the creatures directly rather than just watch them fight.
Gameplay
A defining feature of Extinction is its asymmetric gameplay. Each of the three factions possesses unique units, abilities, and progression systems without the need for resource collection such as minerals or gas. The Xenomorph campaign focuses on spreading infection and overwhelming enemies with numbers by directing drones to infect hosts and grow into various forms including Drones, Warriors, and Primes. The Predator side emphasizes stealth, cloaking technology, and the use of advanced weaponry like plasma casters and wrist blades. Players can upgrade their clan members and utilize thermal vision to track enemies.
The human campaign relies on tactical squad movement, heavy firepower, and defensive positions. Units can be upgraded with better armor and weapons, but they lack the regeneration capabilities of the other factions. The game features 21 single-player missions total, split evenly among the three factions. Critics noted that while the lack of base building streamlined the action, it also reduced the strategic depth compared to contemporaries like StarCraft.
Story
The narrative takes place on LV-742, a desolate planet that serves as a hunting ground for the Predators while harboring a massive Alien hive. The story begins when human colonists arrive on the planet unaware of the danger, only to find themselves caught in an escalating war between the two apex predators. The plot unfolds through three separate perspectives led by Captain S. L. Weaver for the Colonial Marines, a High Yautja for the Predator clan, and the hive mind itself for the Xenomorphs.
Colonial Marines attempt to secure the planet and eliminate the threats but are quickly overwhelmed. A Predator clan arrives to hunt the Aliens, viewing the humans as mere obstacles or sport. The player controls the hive mind, orchestrating the growth of the colony and the assimilation of hosts to destroy both the Predators and the humans.
