Alice Pegler

Alice Pegler's greatest accolade was her 1912 election to the Linnaean Society of London, just eight years after the society began admitting women. This honour placed her among the world's leading naturalists and validated her meticulous work from a remote South African village. Her legacy is further marked by the numerous species named in her honour, most notably Aloe peglerae, a rare aloe endemic to the Magaliesberg mountains, and several fungi species. Her collection of approximately 2,000 specimens, now housed at the South African National Biodiversity Institute, remains a vital scientific resource, a testament to her enduring contribution to botany and mycology.
