    About

Algolia provides a search-as-a-service platform that lets companies add fast, relevant search to their websites and apps without building the infrastructure themselves. The company handles over 50 billion search queries each month, making it the second-largest search engine by query volume after Google. More than 18,000 customers, including Stripe, Slack, and Twitch, rely on Algolia to power their search features.

The platform is built around speed and relevance. Algolia's search algorithms return results in milliseconds, even across massive datasets. The company operates across 70 data centers in 16 regions worldwide, ensuring low latency no matter where users are located. Developers can integrate Algolia with a few lines of code, and the platform supports features like typo tolerance, faceted search, and personalized recommendations out of the box.

Algolia serves a wide range of industries, including e-commerce, media, and enterprise knowledge management. Shopify merchants use Algolia to power product search, while media companies use it to help readers discover articles. The company has expanded into AI-powered search, acquiring startups like MorphL and Search.io to add machine learning capabilities. As of 2024, Algolia's AI Search platform for Shopify and its Agent Studio product aim to make search more intelligent and conversational.

    Mission

Algolia's purpose is to transform how the world discovers information, helping people find what they need without foraging. The company aims to make discovery effortless by understanding intent, surfacing what matters, and delivering results instantly. In practice, this means building an API engine for B2B private search that rivals the speed and relevance of consumer search engines like Google.

    History

Algolia was founded on October 8, 2012, in Paris by Nicolas Dessaigne and Julien Lemoine. The two had worked together at Exalead, a search engine company, where they led engineering teams building web and enterprise search products. Their original idea was an offline search engine for mobile phones, written in highly optimized C++ that could run on devices without an internet connection. But they struggled to find a market for this product.

In 2014, Algolia was accepted into Y Combinator's Winter 2014 batch. That experience pushed the founders to pivot from a mobile SDK to a cloud-based search-as-a-service platform accessible via API. They raised a $1.2 million seed round from Index Ventures and Point Nine Capital. The pivot proved timely. By May 2015, Algolia had raised an $18.3 million Series A led by Accel Partners. The company opened a data center in Singapore in March 2014, expanding beyond its initial European and US centers.

Over the next few years, Algolia grew rapidly. A $53 million Series B in 2017 funded the launch of personalization features. A $110 million Series C in 2019 expanded the company's global infrastructure to 70 data centers across 16 regions. In 2020, Bernadette Nixon replaced Dessaigne as CEO. The company acquired MorphL, a Romanian AI startup, in January 2021, and Search.io in 2022, integrating neural search technology. By 2021, Algolia's Series D valuation hit $2.25 billion, and the company was handling 1.75 trillion searches annually. As of 2024, Algolia continues to invest in AI, launching Agent Studio and an AI Search platform for Shopify.
