Mark Paquin launched Alef Aeronautics in 2015 with a vision to merge the utility of a car with the freedom of flight. The company operates out of San Jose, California, focusing on the Model A, a road-legal electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle designed to bypass urban congestion. Unlike traditional aircraft, this unique machine features a boxy aerodynamic shape that tilts its wings sideways during cruise mode for efficiency while retaining vertical lift capabilities.

By late 2025, the startup transitioned from concept phases into active manufacturing. Reports confirm that production began at their Bay Area facility, where units are assembled by hand. As of January 2026, the company announced over 1,000 successful test flights and entered mass production, with initial deliveries scheduled for early 2026.

The brand targets individual ownership rather than commercial air taxi fleets, aiming at high-net-worth individuals willing to pay a premium for personal aerial mobility. While competitors like Joby Aviation focus on passenger drones requiring infrastructure, Alef secured approximately 3,500 pre-orders for a vehicle capable of operating on public roads without a runway.
