    About This Album

Michelangelo Antonioni needed a sonic landscape that matched the alienation of his American debut, so he reached out to the counterculture scene directly. Released on April 11, 1970 by MGM Records, this soundtrack compiles eleven tracks from artists like Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, and Roscoe Holcomb. The Italian director curated every selection himself to capture what he called the sound of the desert. Pink Floyd provided slow-burning instrumentals while the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia contributed rootsy rambles. Roscoe Holcomb closes the original vinyl with high lonesome vocals that anchor the record in traditional folk.

This collection also serves as an archive for rejected material. Jim Morrison wrote L'America specifically for the project but Antonioni turned it down; the Doors later released it on their 1971 album L.A. Woman. The Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison had songs featured in the film's scenes yet they never appeared on the initial LP release. A 1997 reissue finally corrected this omission by adding four bonus tracks from Jerry Garcia and four from Pink Floyd that were recorded during the sessions.

The film itself runs 113 minutes and stars Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin. Antonioni based the narrative on a newspaper story about a young man stealing a light aircraft during a period of civil unrest. Critics initially found the soundtrack strange due to the film's divisive reception, but its reputation has grown significantly over time. In 2026 Parade magazine ranked it among the best movie soundtracks ever produced, proving this patchwork record outlasted more conventional releases.
