When You Wish Upon A Star

Cliff Edwards first brought 'When You Wish Upon a Star' to life as Jiminy Cricket in the 1940 animated film Pinocchio, setting a standard for Disney music that endures today. Released by Victor Records and EMI, this single marked the studio's first Academy Award win for Best Original Song. The track blends orchestral arrangements with Edwards' distinct, high-pitched vocals to create a timeless sound of hope and moral clarity.

While the original score featured contributions from Leigh Harline and Ned Washington, later versions expanded the song's reach across different musical landscapes. Glenn Miller & His Orchestra reimagined it as a swinging big band number, while Linda Ronstadt and Rod Stewart offered their own soulful interpretations on separate albums. Olivia Newton-John also recorded a version that highlighted the song's pop appeal. These diverse recordings prove the melody works across jazz, country, and pop genres without losing its core message.

The song remains the signature tune for the Walt Disney Company, appearing in production logos since the 1980s. Recent events have kept the title active, including a 2026 D23 celebration where Disney Princesses performed together and a cabaret show headlined by Ali Ewoldt at 54 Below in October 2026. New compilation releases continue to surface alongside these live tributes. [edit]
