This Woman's Work

Kate Bush wrote a song from the perspective of a man standing beside his wife during childbirth for John Hughes' 1988 film She's Having a Baby. The track arrived on the movie's soundtrack before becoming the opening number on her sixth studio album The Sensual World in November 1989. EMI Records issued the single later that year, where it climbed to number 25 on the UK Singles Chart. The composition relies on slow-building synthesizer pads and dramatic percussion to mirror the rising tension of labor.

Maxwell reimagined this art-rock ballad as a neo-soul anthem in 2004. His version swapped Bush's ethereal production for live instrumentation and a smoother groove while keeping the melancholic core intact. This cover reached number one on the US Adult R&B Airplay chart and introduced the song to a new generation of listeners who might not have encountered the original 1988 release. [edit]
