The Twist

May 1958 marked the release of a single that would eventually redefine how people moved in a room. Hank Ballard and the Midnighters issued The Twist as the B-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter" on Federal Records. The track did not explode immediately upon arrival, but its driving shuffle rhythm and Ballard's gritty vocals planted a seed for a dance craze that would sweep the nation years later.

Unlike many contemporaries who focused on partner dances, this song encouraged individuals to twist their hips while keeping their feet planted. The raw R&B sound stood in stark contrast to the sanitized pop versions that followed. When Chubby Checker covered the track in 1960, he brought it to the top of the charts twice, yet historians consistently point to Ballard's original recording as the authentic source of the movement.
