On May 14, 2021, J. Cole released The Off-Season, his sixth studio album and the first project to feature guest artists since 2013's Born Sinner. The title references the period athletes take between seasons to rest and improve their skills, a metaphor Cole applied to his own break from music to refine his craft. Produced primarily by Cole alongside Timbaland, Boi-1da, T-Minus, and DJ Khalil, the fourteen-track record merges boom-bap rhythms with contemporary trap beats.
The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, marking Cole's sixth consecutive chart-topper. It moved 282,000 album-equivalent units in its opening week, driven by a streaming total of 325.5 million plays that stood as the largest for any release in 2021 at that time. Every song on the tracklist entered the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100, with four tracks reaching the top ten.
