Songs in the Key of Life

Stevie Wonder released Songs in the Key of Life on September 28, 1976, through Tamla Records as a sprawling double LP paired with a four-track EP. This eighteen-track masterpiece fused soul, funk, rhythm and blues, avant-pop, and jazz fusion into a singular vision that capped his classic era starting in 1972. The project arrived after a dramatic turning point where Wonder nearly quit music to move to Ghana but instead signed a historic seven-year deal granting him full artistic control. His new contract included a $13 million advance and ownership of publishing rights, marking the largest recording agreement in history at the time.

The album debuted atop the Billboard 200 and spent thirteen consecutive weeks there. Lead singles like "I Wish" and "Sir Duke" both reached number one on the Hot 100. Critics and listeners embraced the record immediately, and it went on to win Album of the Year at the 19th Grammy Awards.
