About This Album
Kendrick Lamar dropped his debut studio album on July 2, 2011, through Top Dawg Entertainment. Before this release, he had built a following with independent projects like Overly Dedicated, but Section.80 marked a shift toward a cohesive narrative. The project explores the lives of people born in the 1980s, focusing heavily on the aftermath of the crack epidemic and the struggles faced by families living in Section 8 housing developments where Lamar grew up in Compton.
The record blends conscious hip-hop with alternative sounds, featuring lush production that draws from jazz and soul. TDE's in-house Digi+Phonics crew handled most of the beats, working alongside collaborators like J. Cole, Terrace Martin, and Sounwave. Guest voices appear throughout, including Colin Munroe on No Make-Up (Her Vice), GLC on Poe Mans Dreams (His Vice), and Schoolboy Q closing out the tracklist with The Spiteful Chant.
Commercial success took time to materialize for the album. It initially debuted at number 113 on the US Billboard 200 and moved roughly 130,000 copies domestically by early 2014. Momentum surged after Lamar signed with Aftermath/Interscope and released good kid, m.A.A.d city. On January 20, 2026, nearly fifteen years later, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the album Platinum, recognizing over one million units sold or streamed.
