    About This Album

Reputation is the sixth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on November 10, 2017, through Big Machine Records. It arrived at a moment when Swift's public image had taken a beating, following a very public feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Rather than retreat, she leaned into the villain narrative, blanketing the album in snake imagery and a moody, maximalist sound that felt like a declaration of war. But beneath the bravado, the record tells a quieter story about finding safety in a new relationship when the rest of the world feels hostile.

Musically, Reputation is a sharp left turn from the glossy pop of 1989. Working again with Max Martin and Shellback, plus Jack Antonoff and a handful of other producers, Swift built an album out of pulsing synthesizers, trap-influenced beats, and heavily processed vocals. The production is dense and confrontational, with abrupt dynamic shifts that mirror the album's emotional whiplash. Lyrically, she trades her usual diaristic specificity for broader, more theatrical swipes at her enemies, though the back half of the album settles into some of the most tender love songs she's ever written.

Critics were split on release. Some praised the boldness and the airtight hooks; others found the bitterness off-putting and the sound cluttered. But the album cleaned up commercially, moving 1.2 million copies in its first week in the US alone. The Reputation Stadium Tour that followed became the highest-grossing North American tour of all time at that point. Over time, the album has been revisited with more warmth, many fans now seeing it as a crucial pivot point that let Swift tear down her old persona and rebuild on her own terms.
