About This Album
Released on May 15, 1975, Moving Violation serves as the tenth studio album by The Jackson 5 and their final project for Motown Records. The group recorded the sessions between October 1974 and March 1975 at Motown Recording Studios in Hollywood while navigating a shift toward the disco sound that defined the mid-1970s. Brian Holland produced the majority of the tracks alongside Michael Lovesmith, Hal Davis, Mel Larsen, and Jerry Marcellino. The nine-song collection blends soul, disco, and funk to create a cohesive listening experience that reflects the era's musical trends.
The track list opens with a cover of Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Forever Came Today," which became a club hit reaching number one on the disco charts. Its B-side, "All I Do Is Think of You," is an R&B ballad that gained lasting popularity through covers by Troop and Boyz II Men. Other standout cuts include the title song "Moving Violation" and "Body Language (Do The Love Dance)." Vocal arrangements came from Michael Lovesmith and John Bahler, while instrumental duties fell to Lovesmith, Arthur G. Wright, Dave Blumberg, and James Anthony Carmichael. John Kosh designed the cover art using photography by Jim Britt.
Commercially, the album sold approximately 1.6 million copies worldwide despite lacking a major crossover pop hit comparable to earlier singles like "I Want You Back." AllMusic and Rolling Stone both awarded the record three out of five stars, praising its consistency and the group's ability to adapt to the disco era. This release closed the group's seven-year relationship with Motown on a successful note before they departed for CBS Records in 1976 to rebrand as The Jacksons.
