About This Album
Announced at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift's tenth studio album arrived on October 21, 2022, through Republic Records. The concept was born from 13 sleepless nights, with Swift describing it as a journey through terrors and sweet dreams. Each track digs into a specific late-night thought, regret, self-doubt, heartbreak, infatuation, the weight of fame, with lyrics that feel pulled straight from a 3 AM diary.
Working again with Jack Antonoff, Swift leaned into a moody synth-pop soundscape. Analog synthesizers, sparse beats, and hushed vocals create an intimate, nocturnal atmosphere. The standard edition runs 44 minutes across 13 songs. Hours after release, Swift surprised fans with the Midnights (3am Edition), adding seven more tracks including the fan favorites Would've, Could've, Should've and The Great War. Lana Del Rey appears on Snow on the Beach, while Zoë Kravitz co-wrote Lavender Haze and Joe Alwyn, under his William Bowery pseudonym, co-wrote Sweet Nothing.
Commercially, Midnights was a juggernaut. It sold 1.6 million equivalent units in its first week, making Swift the first artist ever to notch five million-selling debut weeks. All 20 songs from the 3am Edition charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with Swift monopolizing the entire top 10, a feat no one had achieved before. The album became the best-selling record of 2022 in the US and earned six Grammy nominations, winning Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2024 ceremony. That victory made Swift the first artist to win Album of the Year four times.
