About This Album
Released in May 1972, Lookin' Through the Windows marked a turning point for The Jackson 5 as they moved beyond their early bubblegum sound. This sixth studio album from Motown blended rhythm and blues with soulful arrangements across twelve tracks. Lead singer Michael Jackson stepped into a more mature role, singing about heartbreak and longing rather than just youthful exuberance. The record sold 3.5 million copies worldwide, proving the group could evolve while keeping their tight harmonies intact.
Hal Davis took over production duties after the departure of The Corporation, steering the group toward a polished adult-contemporary R&B aesthetic. The album features the title track and a cover of Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye," which would later become a signature hit for Michael Jackson in his solo career. Critics at the time noted the sophisticated production quality and the way it balanced the group's youthful energy with complex themes of loss.
