About This Album
Madonna stepped away from the polished dance-pop of her previous work to create something far more personal with Like a Prayer. Released on March 21, 1989, through Sire Records and Warner Bros. Records, the album blends rock, gospel, R&B, and dance elements into a cohesive sonic landscape. She worked closely with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, while Prince made a significant contribution by co-writing and performing on "Love Song." The record dives deep into her Catholic upbringing, the death of her mother, her marriage to Sean Penn, and her complex relationship with her father.
Original physical copies arrived scented with patchouli oil to evoke an earthy atmosphere that matched the spiritual themes inside. Upon release, critics praised the maturity of the songs and the diversity of the sound. It topped charts in 20 countries and eventually sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Six singles emerged from the project, including the title track which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, along with "Express Yourself" and "Cherish," both hitting number two.
