Life of a Don

Don Toliver returned with Life of a Don on October 8, 2021, marking his second full-length studio effort. The project arrived through Cactus Jack Records and Atlantic Records as a direct follow-up to his 2020 debut Heaven or Hell. Toliver described the album as the work of an experienced older brother who aims to expand upon previous sounds while maintaining a cohesive atmosphere. The record features heavy production from industry veterans Mike Dean, Metro Boomin, and Mustard.

The final release contains 16 tracks running approximately 51 minutes. It blends hip-hop beats with contemporary R&B melodies anchored by a late-night drive aesthetic. Prominent collaborators include Travis Scott, who appears on five separate songs, alongside Kali Uchis, Baby Keem, Sheck Wes, Young Thug, and Future. Early singles like "What You Need" built anticipation before the drop, while "Flocky Flocky" served as a major post-release promotional cut.

Critics noted the album's seamless transitions and smooth hooks that balance street narratives with melodic sensibilities. A Reddit discussion at the time highlighted the "cool, vibey, smokey type songs" despite some listeners feeling it lacked a deep narrative arc beyond its mood. Commercially, the project debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. In its first week, it moved 68,000 album-equivalent units driven primarily by streaming consumption. [edit]
