About This Album
Jim Henson's 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth brought together David Bowie and composer Trevor Jones for a soundtrack that merged pop rock with sweeping orchestral arrangements. Released on June 23, 1986 via EMI America Records, the album features five songs written and performed by Bowie alongside seven instrumental pieces composed by Jones. The recording sessions took place between July and September 1985 in London under the production of Bowie, Jones, and Arif Mardin.
Bowie contributed tracks including "Underground," "Magic Dance," "As the World Falls Down," "Within You," and "Chilly Down." The latter track stands out as a vocal performance by the Firey actors Charles Augins, Richard Bodkin, Kevin Clash, and Danny John-Jules rather than Bowie himself. Trevor Jones handled the remaining score with orchestrations by himself and soloists like David Lawson and Brian Gascoigne. The opening medley "Opening Titles Including Underground" sets the tone before moving into Jones's instrumental themes like "Sarah" and "The Goblin Battle."
Upon release the album received mixed reviews but found a dedicated following over time. It peaked at number 68 on the US Billboard 200 and reached number 38 in the UK Albums Chart. New Zealand offered its strongest showing with the record climbing to number 15. After years of being out of print, UMe reissued the album on vinyl in May 2017 to mark the film's 30th anniversary. This edition came on 120gm black vinyl featuring original artwork and an inner sleeve with photos of David Bowie.
