About This Album
Nas released Illmatic on April 19, 1994, through Columbia Records after recording sessions at New York studios like Chung King and Battery between 1992 and 1993. The twenty-year-old Queensbridge resident crafted ten tracks that blended boom bap rhythms with jazz samples, creating a sonic backdrop for his vivid descriptions of street life. He began writing these lines at sixteen, using complex internal rhyme schemes to document the struggles of his neighborhood without softening the reality. Critics praised the sharp lyricism immediately, even though commercial momentum took time to build since the singles never climbed the charts.
The project peaked at number twelve on the Billboard 200 but eventually earned gold status in early 1996 and platinum by late 2001 after moving one million units in the US. By 2019, sales reached two million copies, cementing its place as a cornerstone for the genre. Music writers now view this debut as sparking a revival of New York rap and influencing countless artists who followed. Rolling Stone ranked it forty-fourth on their list of greatest albums in 2020, while the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry for its cultural importance.
