About This Album
Billie Eilish's second studio album, Happier Than Ever, arrived on July 30, 2021 via Darkroom and Interscope Records. Co-written with her brother Finneas O'Connell, who also produced and played every instrument, the album was shaped by self-reflection during the COVID-19 pandemic. It marks a deliberate shift from the trap-pop of her debut, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019), toward a softer, more introspective sound. The 16-track record blends downtempo pop with jazz-influenced electropop, sparse arrangements, and meditative tempos. Lyrically, it's a collection of torch songs that dissect the pitfalls of stardom, drawing from Eilish's own rapid rise.
Critics praised its restrained production and sharp songwriting. At the 64th Grammy Awards, the album and its title track earned seven nominations, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Seven singles supported the album, with Therefore I Am peaking at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Happier Than Ever debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and topped charts in 27 other countries. Eilish brought the songs to life in the Disney+ concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (September 2021) and on the Happier Than Ever, The World Tour, which ran from February 2022 to April 2023.
