    About This Album

The film premiere in New York City on August 17, 2001, set the stage for Mariah Carey's eighth studio album and accompanying soundtrack. Glitter arrived just one day later on August 18, though it officially hit retail shelves on September 11 following the attacks that Tuesday. This project marked a sharp pivot from her previous ballad-heavy work to an '80s post-disco and funk aesthetic designed to match the movie's 1983 setting. Carey assembled a team of producers including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, DJ Clue, and Clark Kent to craft a sound blending dance-pop, hip-hop, and contemporary R&B.

Commercially, the album debuted at number seven on the US Billboard 200, marking Carey's lowest first-week sales at that time. The poor reception of the film cast a shadow over the music, leading critics to dismiss the record upon release. Despite domestic struggles, the project reached number one in Greece, Japan, and South Korea. Lead single "Loverboy" featuring Eminem peaked at number two on the Hot 100, becoming her highest-charting single since 1997.

Carey's contract with Virgin Records ended shortly after this release as the label bought out her $100 million deal. The album was eventually certified Platinum in the United States and sold over two million copies globally. Nearly twenty-five years later, retrospective views have softened significantly, with many modern reviewers praising the production quality and citing the record as a precursor to the late 2010s resurgence of '80s-inspired pop. A deluxe edition is scheduled for release on October 30, 2026.
