Three Doors Down returned with Away from the Sun on November 12, 2002, solidifying their spot as a dominant force in post-grunge. The record produced three major singles that climbed the Billboard Hot 100. "When I'm Gone" reached number four while "Here Without You" peaked at five. The title track also charted at number 62.

This approach resonated deeply with listeners who craved raw emotion wrapped in polished production. By August 4, 2006, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the album quadruple platinum.
