    About This Album

When Travis Scott dropped Astroworld on August 3, 2018, it arrived with the weight of a hometown that had lost its most magical landmark. Named after the Six Flags AstroWorld theme park that shut down in Houston in 2005, the album was Scott's attempt to give kids that feeling of wonder again. As he put it, the goal was to capture what it's like when someone takes an amusement park away from you. This was his third studio album, following Rodeo (2015) and Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), plus the 2017 Quavo collaboration Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho. Released through Cactus Jack Records and Grand Hustle Records with distribution by Epic Records, it hit streaming services and physical formats on the same day.

The record is a dense, swirling blend of hip-hop and psychedelic rap, with trap beats layered under atmospheric production. Scott pulled in an enormous guest list: Frank Ocean, Drake, Swae Lee, Kid Cudi, James Blake, Juice Wrld, The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Gunna, NAV, Don Toliver, Quavo, Takeoff, Pharrell Williams, Sheck Wes, Philip Bailey, and Stevie Wonder all appear. Behind the boards, producers like Mike Dean, Hit-Boy, WondaGurl, Tay Keith, Tame Impala, Frank Dukes, Sonny Digital, Murda Beatz, and Thundercat shaped the sound. John Mayer contributed guitar, and Kevin Parker of Tame Impala brought his signature psych-pop touch. The 17 tracks move from the dizzying opener "STARGAZING" to the chaotic "SICKO MODE" to the closing ballad "COFFEE BEAN," creating a ride that feels both disorienting and carefully controlled.

Commercially, Astroworld was a monster. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 537,000 album-equivalent units, including 270,000 in pure sales, one of the biggest first-week totals of 2018. The lead single "Butterfly Effect" had already been out for over a year, but "SICKO MODE" with Drake became Scott's first number-one on the Hot 100. The album has since been certified six-times platinum by the RIAA. Critically, it landed on numerous year-end and decade-end lists, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album, and won Album of the Year at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. It also spawned the Astroworld Festival, an annual Houston event that would later become the site of tragedy in 2021, casting a long shadow over the album's legacy.
