When Taylor Swift first released 1989 in 2014, it was a full-throated declaration of pop ambition. The project began after Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings acquired Swift's master recordings from Big Machine Records in 2019, a dispute that left her without ownership of her first six albums. By re-recording each one, Swift could create new masters she controlled entirely.

The album faithfully reproduces all 16 tracks from the original deluxe edition, including the synth-pop anthems "Blank Space," "Style," and "Shake It Off." Swift worked with original producers like Max Martin, Shellback, and Imogen Heap to recreate the exact sound of the 2014 recordings, while Jack Antonoff produced all five vault tracks. Critics noted that Swift's voice has matured over the years, bringing new depth to songs like "Clean" and "This Love." The vault tracks, meanwhile, offer a window into the creative process of an artist at the peak of her pop powers. "Is It Over Now?" became an instant fan favorite, its sharp lyrics about a messy breakup fitting seamlessly alongside the original album's themes. Commercially, 1989 (Taylor's Version) was a juggernaut. It sold 1.653 million album-equivalent units in its first week, surpassing the original's debut and becoming the first album to sell over a million vinyl copies in a single year since Luminate began tracking.
