Pardew's managerial career is defined by promotion successes and deep cup runs. He won promotion three times: as a player with Crystal Palace in 1989 and as manager with Reading in 2002 and West Ham United in 2005. He reached three FA Cup finals, as a player in 1990 and as manager in 2006 and 2016, a rare achievement. His 2011-12 season at Newcastle, where he finished fifth in the Premier League and won both major manager of the year awards, remains the high point of his career.
