Al Jazira Club, whose Arabic name means 'The Island,' has been a fixture in Abu Dhabi's sporting life since its founding on March 9, 1974. That day came about through a merger of Al Khalidiya and Al Bateen, two local sides that had only recently formed. The early years were a struggle, with relegation hitting the club more than once during the 1980s and 1990s. Everything shifted in the 2000s, when Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan stepped in with serious investment, turning Al Jazira into a consistent contender at the top of Emirati football.

The club plays its home matches at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, a venue that opened in 1979 as Al Jazira Stadium and underwent a major renovation between 2006 and 2009 before taking its current name. The stadium holds roughly 36,000 to 37,000 fans, depending on the source, and it is known for the passionate support that fills its stands on match days. Beyond football, Al Jazira operates seven other professional sports teams, including basketball, handball, and futsal, making it a central hub for athletics in the capital.

Al Jazira's youth academy is widely regarded as one of the best in the region, producing homegrown talents who have gone on to represent the UAE national team. The club's colors, white and red, are a familiar sight across the country, and its fans take pride in a side that has consistently challenged for trophies while nurturing local players alongside international signings. The club's formative decades were marked by instability. Relegation in the 1980s and 1990s forced Al Jazira to rebuild more than once, and it was not until the mid-2000s that the tide turned. A key moment came in 2007, when the team lifted the GCC Champions League, a regional title that signaled their arrival on a wider stage. That same year, the club also won the UAE Federation Cup, a competition that has since been discontinued.

The investment from Sheikh Mansour brought in a series of high-profile coaches and players, and the rewards soon followed. Abel Braga, the Brazilian who took charge in 2008, guided the club to its first UAE Pro League title in the 2010-11 season. That campaign also saw a President's Cup triumph, completing a memorable double. The club repeated the league success in 2016-17 under Dutch coach Henk ten Cate, and again in 2020-21, a season that ended with a Super Cup victory as well.

On the continental stage, Al Jazira reached the final of the AFC Champions League in 2017, though they fell short of the title. Their performance in that tournament earned them a spot at the FIFA Club World Cup later that year, where they finished fourth, a respectable showing for a club from the UAE.
