About
Al-Ahli Saudi Football Club, often shortened to Al-Ahli, is a professional football club based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Founded in 1937, the club has grown into one of the most decorated teams in the country, with a passionate fan base and a history of success that spans nearly a century. Al-Ahli competes in the Saudi Pro League, the top tier of Saudi football, and has been a consistent presence at the highest level since the league's inception.
The club's trophy cabinet is impressive: nine Saudi Pro League titles, eight King's Cups, six Crown Prince Cups, two Super Cups, and three Federation Cups. On the continental stage, Al-Ahli has won two AFC Champions League titles, a record three GCC Champions League trophies, and one Arab Club Championship. They made history as the first Saudi club to win the league and King's Cup in the same season, achieving this double in 1978 and again in 2016.
Al-Ahli was one of the four founding members of the Saudi Pro League alongside Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Nassr. For decades, they never faced relegation, but that streak ended in the 2021–22 season. The club also holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in league history, going 51 matches without defeat between 2014 and 2016. Home matches are played at King Abdullah Sports City, a massive venue they share with city rivals Al-Ittihad and Jeddah FC. The stadium, often called the Shining Jewel, is the second-largest in Saudi Arabia, with a capacity of around 63,000.
History
Founded in 1937 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahli Saudi Football Club is one of the nation's most storied clubs. Initially known as the 'National Sports Club', it was renamed Al-Ahli in 1947. The club became one of the four founding members of the Saudi Pro League in 1976. Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal played a significant role in the club's development, often considered its spiritual father for his contributions and efforts to bring world-class figures to represent Al-Ahli.
Al-Ahli's football team achieved a historic double in the 1978 season, winning both the Saudi Pro League and the King's Cup. This feat was repeated in the 2016 season. The club holds the record for the longest unbeaten run in the Saudi Pro League, an impressive 51-match streak from 2014 to 2016. In 2009, Al-Ahli's handball team secured both the Asian Championship and the Gulf Cup, while their football and volleyball teams also claimed Gulf Championship titles that year. The club's football team made history in 2025 by winning the AFC Champions League Elite, which secured their qualification for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2026 Confederations Cup.
The club's intense rivalry with Al-Ittihad is known as the Jeddah Derby. For many years, Al-Ahli was a fixture in the top flight, never experiencing relegation until the 2021–22 season. The club's supporters, who affectionately refer to the team as 'Al-Ahlawy', have shown deep devotion, making the club a cultural symbol that unites fans under its distinctive green and white colors. In 2009, Al-Ahli was honored with the title 'Ambassador of the Homeland' in recognition of its substantial impact on Saudi football and its global representation of the country.
