Overview
Origin Story
Akuma was born as the younger brother of Gouken, both trained in the Ansatsuken style under a master named Goutetsu. While Gouken embraced discipline and the light, Akuma was drawn to the Satsui no Hado, the dark energy that amplifies power but corrupts the soul. In a duel to prove his mastery, Akuma killed Goutetsu and then faced Gouken, whom he also believed he had slain. This fratricide became the cornerstone of his existence. He has since wandered the world, seeking opponents strong enough to test his power, and has shown a particular interest in Ryu, who carries the same latent darkness.
Personality
Akuma is cold, ruthless, and utterly consumed by the Satsui no Hado. He speaks little and acts with brutal efficiency. His only joy comes from fighting worthy opponents, and he shows no mercy to the weak. Unlike many villains, he is not driven by greed or conquest; his sole purpose is to perfect his martial art through combat. He follows a personal code of honor, never attacking the defenseless, but he will destroy anyone who stands in his way.
Story Arc
Akuma's arc is defined by his obsession with Ryu. He sees Ryu as a potential heir to the Satsui no Hado and repeatedly tests him, hoping to push him over the edge. In Street Fighter IV, the revelation that Gouken survived their fight reignites their rivalry. In Street Fighter V, Akuma confronts his inner demons and achieves a new form, Shin Akuma, after nearly succumbing to the Satsui no Hado. His appearance in Tekken 7 sees him hunting Kazuya Mishima, drawn by the devil gene's power. In Street Fighter 6, he continues his path, serving as a reminder of the darkness that awaits those who seek ultimate power.

Reception & Legacy
Akuma is widely regarded as one of the most iconic fighting game characters of all time. His introduction as a hidden boss set a precedent for secret characters in the genre. Players and critics praise his aggressive, high-damage playstyle, though his low health makes him a glass cannon. He has become a staple in competitive play, particularly in Super Street Fighter II Turbo and later titles. His crossover appearances, especially in Tekken 7, have expanded his popularity beyond the Street Fighter fanbase. Merchandise, including the recent Jada Toys SDCC exclusive, continues to sell well, reflecting his enduring appeal.
