The nation stands split after a brutal civil war left the wealthy, technologically advanced Kantō region dominating the impoverished Kansai area. The Kantō Police enforce strict order in Kansai, branding high-priority criminals as Akudama. These outlaws possess extreme combat skills or supernatural abilities and live under constant threat of execution. A mysterious entity known only as the Black Cat orchestrates a desperate plan to infiltrate a high-security facility and rescue the legendary Cutthroat moments before his public death. This mission sets off a chain reaction that threatens to upend the fragile peace between the two regions.
An ordinary young woman from Kansai becomes the unexpected center of this chaos. She attempts a simple act of kindness by returning a lost 500-yen coin but is mistakenly identified as a criminal due to a system glitch. Labeled an Ordinary Person turned Swindler, she is forcibly recruited into the Akudama team. The group now consists of six seasoned criminals: the stoic Courier, the gentle giant Brawler, the tech-savvy Hacker, the cold Doctor, the reckless Hoodlum, and the reluctant Swindler.
As the team races against time to save the Cutthroat, they face relentless pursuit from the Kantō Police and navigate complex internal dynamics. The narrative explores themes of identity and justice within a society where the law often acts as the greater evil. Each character carries a tragic backstory that adds depth to their motivations. The relationship between the Swindler and the other Akudama evolves from distrust to a reluctant camaraderie, challenging her perception of good and evil. The season builds toward a climax where the true intentions of the Black Cat are tested, and the fate of the entire nation hangs in the balance.
Throughout the twelve-episode run, the action remains relentless, featuring high-speed chases, cybernetic enhancements, and stylized violence. The series pays homage to classic anime tropes while subverting expectations regarding genre conventions. The characters make impossible choices that define their journeys of self-discovery. Their bonds form in the crucible of a broken world, leaving the audience questioning redemption and the cost of freedom without revealing the ultimate resolution of their fates or the final outcome of the conflict.
