About
Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, commonly known as Ajax, is a professional football club based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Founded on March 18, 1900, the club is named after the Greek hero Ajax. Ajax is the most decorated club in Dutch football history, with a record 36 Eredivisie titles and 20 KNVB Cups. They have played continuously in the Eredivisie since the league's inception in 1956 and are part of the country's 'big three' alongside Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven.
Internationally, Ajax is one of the most successful clubs ever. They have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League four times (1971, 1972, 1973, 1995), the UEFA Cup once (1992), the UEFA Super Cup twice (1973, 1995), and the Intercontinental Cup twice (1972, 1995). Ajax is one of only five clubs to have won all three major UEFA club competitions and one of four to achieve the continental treble, which they did in 1971-72. The club was named World Team of the Year by World Soccer magazine in 1995.
Ajax is renowned for its youth academy, De Toekomst, which has produced legends like Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, and Dennis Bergkamp. The club's philosophy, influenced by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, emphasizes attacking football and technical skill. Their home ground is the Johan Cruyff Arena, a 55,000-seat stadium opened in 1996. The club's passionate fan base includes the F-Side supporter group.
History
Ajax was founded on March 18, 1900, by Floris Stempel, Carel Reeser, and Han Dade. The club initially played at various grounds before settling at De Meer Stadion in 1934. Under the guidance of Jack Reynolds in the early 20th century, Ajax developed an attacking style that laid the foundation for future success. The club won its first Eredivisie title in 1918 and its first KNVB Cup in 1917.
The 1970s were a golden era. Led by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, Ajax revolutionized football with 'Total Football.' They won three consecutive European Cups from 1971 to 1973. Cruyff returned as manager in the 1980s, winning the 1987 European Cup Winners' Cup. Louis van Gaal's tenure in the 1990s brought another Champions League title in 1995, plus a UEFA Cup in 1992.
In the 21st century, Ajax continued to produce talent and win domestic titles. Under Erik ten Hag, they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 and won multiple Eredivisie titles. However, the 2023-24 season was disappointing, finishing fifth. The club appointed Francesco Farioli as head coach in 2024 to lead a rebuilding phase.
