Aizat Amdan

Muhammad Aizat bin Amdan, known professionally as Aizat Amdan or by his moniker Ai.Z, is a Malaysian singer-songwriter and actor based in Kuala Lumpur. He first captured the nation's attention during the fifth season of the reality singing competition Akademi Fantasia in 2007. While his powerful vocals launched his career, he became equally famous for a dramatic physical transformation that shed 30 kilograms from his initial weight of 112 kg. This period marked the start of an artistic evolution, shifting him from a mainstream pop contestant to an alternative pop-rock artist.

Today, Aizat stands as one of Malaysia's most versatile vocalists, blending Britpop influences with traditional Malaysian sounds like gamelan. His work under the Ai.Z identity has garnered critical acclaim for its experimental nature and emotional depth. With hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners on global streaming platforms and a dedicated fanbase, he continues to release music that bridges cultural gaps and personal storytelling. [edit]

Born into a family in Kuala Lumpur, Aizat's early years were defined by a struggle with self-image and weight before he ever stepped onto a stage. He did not receive formal training in music production during his childhood but possessed a natural inclination toward performance and expression. His entry into the public eye came through a high-stakes audition for Akademi Fantasia Season 5 in 2007. The show served as a pivotal turning point, offering not just a career launchpad but a structured environment for his personal health journey.

During the rigorous filming schedule and intense training regimen of the competition, Aizat underwent a drastic weight loss regimen that captivated viewers. He successfully dropped 30 kilograms, a metamorphosis that became a central part of his public narrative and symbolized resilience. Following the show's conclusion, he quickly transitioned to recording, releasing his debut singles "Hanya Kau Yang Mampu" and "Sahabat" in late 2007. "Hanya Kau Yang Mampu" achieved massive commercial success, eventually becoming the most downloaded song of 2009 at the Anugerah Planet Muzik awards, setting the stage for his future endeavors. [edit]

Aizat's career trajectory has been defined by reinvention and genre-blending projects that kept him relevant across two decades. After his debut albums Percubaan Pertama and Urusan Aizat Amdan established him as a leading male vocalist, he spent the 2010s exploring acting roles while maintaining music as his primary focus. During the pandemic lockdowns in 2020, he remained active by participating in the "Ramadan Di Rumah" online concert series and featuring in a Southeast Asian COVID-19 awareness song.

A significant shift occurred in June 2021 when he rebranded as "Ai.Z." Collaborating with Malaysian superstar Yuna, who wrote his debut single under this new persona titled "The Last Thing," he moved toward a more introspective, alternative sound. This era brought viral attention in October 2023 when netizens dubbed him "The Sam Smith of Malaysia" due to striking vocal similarities. In late 2024, he channeled the discipline of Muay Thai boxing into his music, releasing the single "Tegap Berdiri." By mid-2026, he released the spiritual single "SOG" and collaborated with Yuna and Sekumpulan Orang Gila on the track "Ajar Aku." His recent announcements include the album Simfoni Hati Beradu and the music video for "Out Alive," cementing his status as a dynamic force in the local industry. [edit]

Aizat is known for a "casual and punk" aesthetic that blends streetwear with artistic flair, reflecting his alternative music direction. His public image portrays him as resilient, authentic, and emotionally vulnerable, particularly following his openness about grief and mental health. The media frequently highlights his journey from a heavy-set reality star to a fit, refined artist. His social media voice remains direct and unfiltered, allowing fans to see behind the scenes without the filter of a large PR team. [edit]

Aizat Amdan does not have a formal, codified fandom name or a centralized fan club structure. His supporters engage organically through social media channels like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, valuing his accessible approach over orchestrated campaigns. This community connects through shared appreciation for his artistic reinventions, such as the transition to "Ai.Z" and the integration of traditional sounds. They celebrate milestones like the release of "Simfoni Hati Beradu" or the unique fusion of traditional gamelan in "Nongga" without the need for structured streaming drives.

His standing in the global cultural consciousness remains steady, anchored by consistent visibility across music and media. According to the iFANN Global Fame Rankings, he holds a prominent position as the 68th most famous person from Malaysia. This placement reflects a sustained level of attention that tracks global media coverage and consumption signals worldwide. The data confirms he is currently recognized as the 68th most famous person from Malaysia, solidifying his status as a key figure in the nation's entertainment landscape. [edit]

Fans often recall the viral moment in October 2023 when netizens compared his vocal timbre to British singer Sam Smith, creating a nickname that stuck among his followers.
