AirTag

Apple introduced the AirTag in April 2021 as a compact, coin-shaped tracker designed to help users locate everyday items like keys and wallets. The device operates by connecting to the Find My network, which utilizes billions of active iOS devices worldwide to anonymously relay location data via Bluetooth Low Energy. This approach allows the tracker to be found even when it is far from its owner, turning the global fleet of iPhones into a GPS-free locating grid.

The original model relied on standard Bluetooth signals for guidance but included a precision finding feature enabled by the U1 chip in compatible iPhones. This technology lets users see directional arrows and distance estimates when searching for lost items. An updated version arrived in early 2026, integrating the newer U2 chip for extended detection ranges and a louder speaker to aid in locating items in noisy environments.

This second iteration expands compatibility to include tracking via Apple Watch models running watchOS 26.2.1 or later, offering a hands-free experience without needing to pull out a phone.
