Founded in 1960 as Deutsche Seereederei, the company began operations carrying passengers and cargo before shifting its focus entirely to leisure travel after Costa Cruises acquired it in 1995. The rebranding to AIDA marked a strategic pivot toward the German-speaking market, where the line now operates exclusively from its headquarters in Rostock. This approach allows the brand to maintain a distinct cultural identity that differs significantly from its British-American parent corporation, Carnival Corporation & plc.

The fleet currently includes 13 ships designed to offer an informal atmosphere often described as a floating club rather than a traditional cruise liner.
