After School

After School debuted on January 15, 2009, with the single "AH" from their EP New Schoolgirl. The group was built around a rotating lineup concept inspired by Japanese idol group Morning Musume, where members could "graduate" and new ones could "enroll." This structure, unprecedented in K-pop, kept the group dynamic but also led to frequent changes. The original lineup included leader Kahi, Jungah, Soyoung, Jooyeon, Uee, Bekah, and Raina. Soyoung left shortly after debut, and Bekah graduated in 2011. Kahi, the driving force behind the group, graduated in 2012 to pursue solo activities. Uee left in 2016 after focusing on acting.

After School's early hits like "Because of You" (2009) and "Bang!" (2010) showcased a mature, powerful image that contrasted with the cute concepts then dominating girl groups. "Bang!" featured the members playing drums on stage, a performance element that became their signature. In 2010, they formed the subunit Orange Caramel with Raina, Nana, and Lizzy, which gained massive popularity for its quirky, retro concepts. The subunit's 2014 single "Catallena" became a viral hit.

The group's 2013 single "First Love" incorporated pole dancing, sparking controversy but also highlighting their willingness to push boundaries. After School continued releasing music in Japan, where they had a dedicated fanbase, with albums like Virgin (2011) and Dress to Kill (2014). Their final Korean single was "Shh" (2015). After 2015, the group effectively went on hiatus as members pursued individual careers in acting, modeling, and solo music.
