    About

AFC Wimbledon is a professional association football club formed in 2002 by supporters of the original Wimbledon F.C. after its controversial relocation to Milton Keynes. The club was established to preserve the heritage and community spirit of the original club, starting its journey in the ninth tier of English football. It is the first club founded in the 21st century to reach the Football League, showcasing a remarkable ascent through the divisions.

The club's home ground is Plough Lane, a modern stadium opened in November 2020, situated near the site of the historic original Plough Lane. This marked a significant homecoming for the club and its fans. AFC Wimbledon is notable for its fan-owned structure through The Dons Trust, ensuring supporters have a direct say in the club's operations and direction. This model has fostered strong community ties and led to various award-winning initiatives.

    History

AFC Wimbledon was founded in 2002 by supporters of Wimbledon F.C. who were unhappy with the club's proposed move to Milton Keynes. The club began play in the Combined Counties League, the ninth tier of English football. In its first season, 2002-03, the club achieved promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division.

The club's rise through the leagues was rapid. They secured promotion to the Isthmian League in 2004, then to the Conference South in 2006. A further promotion in 2011 saw them reach the Conference National. In 2016, AFC Wimbledon achieved promotion to League Two, and then to League One in the same year, marking their arrival in the Football League. The club holds the record for the longest unbeaten league run in English senior football, with 78 matches without a defeat between February 2003 and December 2004.

After a period in League One, the club was relegated to League Two for the 2022-23 season. In the 2024-25 season, they secured promotion back to League One via the play-offs. The club moved into its new home, Plough Lane, in November 2020, a significant development that brought them back to their spiritual home.

AFC Wimbledon also has a women's team that achieved promotion to the Women’s National League–Southern Premier Division in 2024 after winning the Women’s National League Division One South East.
