About
aespa is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment, debuting on November 17, 2020 with the single "Black Mamba." The group consists of four members: Karina, Winter, Ningning, and Giselle. Known for their innovative "metaverse" concept, each member has a virtual avatar counterpart in the digital world of KWANGYA. Their music blends hyper-pop, EDM, and trap, with experimental structures that set them apart in the K-pop landscape.
Their debut single "Black Mamba" became a viral hit, with the music video surpassing 100 million YouTube views in just 52 days, a record for a K-pop group debut at the time. The following year, "Next Level" cemented their reputation for genre-switching, unconventional song structures, becoming one of the biggest hits of 2021 in Korea. Their first EP Savage (2021) debuted at number one on the Circle Album Chart and entered the Billboard 200, making them one of the fastest rookie girl groups to achieve that.
In 2022, aespa performed at Coachella, becoming one of the first fourth-generation girl groups to do so. Their second EP Girls (2022) peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, a new high. The group continued to expand their sound with the EPs MY WORLD (2023) and Drama (2023), both topping Korean charts and charting on the Billboard 200. In May 2024, they released their first full-length album Armageddon, led by the pre-release single "Supernova" and the title track "Armageddon," which further solidified their place as leaders in experimental K-pop.
Formation Story
aespa was formed by SM Entertainment as part of their SM Culture Universe (SMCU) storyline, which connects various SM artists. The members were revealed individually in late 2020 through teasers: Karina first, then Winter, Ningning, and Giselle. Karina was cast through social media and had appeared as a backup dancer for Taemin's "Want" in 2019. Winter joined SM as a teen and trained for about three to four years. Ningning was a former SM Rookies trainee, revealed in 2016, and had performed vocal covers on SM content. Giselle, a Japanese-Korean trainee, passed a private audition in Japan and trained for only about 11 months, one of the shortest training periods among SM idols.
The group's concept revolves around a digital universe where each member has an "æ" avatar, blending reality and virtual reality. The group name aespa combines "æ" (avatar) and "aspect" (dual sides). Their debut was preceded by a series of teasers introducing the SMCU lore, and they officially debuted on November 17, 2020, with the single "Black Mamba."

Musical Style
aespa's music is characterized by high-energy electronic production, blending hyper-pop, EDM, trap, and dance-pop. Their early work features aggressive synths and intense choruses, as seen in "Black Mamba" and "Savage." The song "Next Level" showcases their experimental side, switching between hip-hop, trap, and funk within a single track, a style that became a signature. Their lyrics often tie into the SMCU storyline, referencing KWANGYA, Black Mamba, and their avatars.
Over time, their sound has evolved to incorporate more accessible pop and R&B influences. The EP MY WORLD (2023) introduced a Y2K-inspired, funk-driven sound with "Spicy," while "Drama" (2023) returned to darker R&B and trap. Their first full album Armageddon (2024) balances experimental tracks like "Supernova" with melodic R&B and pop, showing their versatility.
