    Overview

Kei Yonagi is a high school girl struggling to support her younger siblings after their mother's death. Desperate for money, she attends an open audition for a film and is discovered by the eccentric director Sumiji Kuroyama. He recognizes her raw, untrained talent for immersive method acting, a style so intense that she physically and emotionally becomes the character, sometimes losing herself in the process. Kuroyama takes her on as his protégé, and Kei enters the competitive world of professional acting, joining the agency Daikokuten. The series follows her as she takes on increasingly challenging roles in stage plays, films, and television, learning to control her powerful, sometimes dangerous, acting style.

Each story arc focuses on a different production, allowing Kei to tackle diverse genres from a period drama to a superhero film. Her growth is shaped by her relationships with rival actors, including the prodigy Chiyoko Arisugawa and the experienced Hiiragi Yuki, as well as the intense, behind-the-scenes realities of the entertainment industry. The narrative explores the craft of acting, script analysis, character building, and the psychological toll of performance, all while Kei grapples with her own identity and the boundary between herself and the roles she plays.

The manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from January 2018 to August 2020, collected into 12 tankōbon volumes. Its English release by Viz Media was cut short after the author's arrest led to the series' abrupt cancellation and removal from digital platforms. Despite its premature end, Act-Age was praised for its unique subject matter and striking artwork, and it placed fourth in the 2019 Manga Taishō Award.
