Acer

Acer Inc. began as Multitech Electronics in August 1976, founded by Stan Shih and his wife Cindy Shih in Taiwan. The company adopted the name Acer in 1983, drawing from the Latin word for sharp or aggressive to signal its competitive ambitions. Starting as a small distributor of computer peripherals, the firm expanded into manufacturing and eventually became the sixth-largest PC vendor globally by unit sales in 2024.

Stan Shih served as chairman and chief executive officer until 2015, when he passed operational control to his son Jason Chen. Under this family leadership, Acer shifted its strategy in the early 2000s by moving away from in-house production. The company now focuses on design, marketing, and distribution while outsourcing manufacturing to contract partners. This lean model allows Acer to maintain competitive pricing and adapt quickly to market changes.

The brand offers a wide range of hardware including desktops, laptops, tablets, servers, and displays. Its gaming division features two distinct lines: Predator for high-performance enthusiasts and Nitro for mid-range users. Recent product launches include the Googlebook 14 with Intel Panther Lake processors and OLED screens, alongside the Swift Go Copilot+ PC powered by AMD Ryzen AI 9 chips. [edit]
