About Damn Time

Lizzo dropped "About Damn Time" on April 14, 2022, as the lead single from her fourth studio album Special. The track arrived after a three-year gap since her breakthrough album Cuz I Love You, and the title itself nods to fans who had been waiting for new music. Written as the final song for the album, it blends nu-disco and funk with a four-on-the-floor beat, bass-heavy grooves, and glittery synths that transport listeners back to the 1970s. The lyrics center on self-love and moving past anxiety, with the refrain "Turn up the music, turn down the lights, I got a feelin' I'm gon' be alright" capturing a celebratory, cathartic mood.

The song became Lizzo's second number one on the Billboard Hot 100, following "Truth Hurts," and peaked at number six on the Billboard Global 200. It also reached the top three in over ten countries. Produced by Ricky Reed and co-written by Lizzo, Blake Slatkin, Eric Frederic, and Theron Thomas, the single helped define the sound of Special, an album about resilience and confidence. Critics praised its infectious groove and empowering message, with many noting its role in the early-2020s pop-disco resurgence.

The official music video, released the same day, has garnered around 100 million views on YouTube. At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, the song earned nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Its upbeat energy and catchy hook made it a staple on social media, particularly for dance trends, further cementing its place as a summer anthem.[edit]
