Aberdeen Football Club has competed in the top division of Scottish football since 1905 without ever suffering relegation. While Glasgow clubs have historically dominated the landscape, Aberdeen secured its own legacy by becoming the last non-Old Firm side to win the league title in the 1984–85 season. This achievement came under the management of Alex Ferguson, who led the squad to three league championships and four domestic cups during the 1980s.

The club's European success remains unmatched by any other Scottish team. They captured the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup in 1983, standing as the final Scottish club to lift a major European trophy. Their kit identity shifted from original black and gold vertical stripes to the iconic red and white scheme adopted in 1939. The club was established on April 14, 1903, and gained election to the Scottish Football League in 1905. For over a century, they maintained an unbroken presence in the top tier of Scottish football. The 1980s marked a golden era under Alex Ferguson, transforming the team into a European powerhouse. During this decade, Aberdeen won three league titles and four domestic cups, culminating in their historic victories in the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup in 1983. They remain the only Scottish team to win two major European trophies and the last to lift one overall.

Following the departure of Ferguson, the club navigated various managerial changes including Derek McInnes, Jimmy Thelin, and Barry Robson. The 2020s brought new challenges and opportunities. Neil Warnock served as manager for just 33 days before departing in August 2026 due to specific frustrations. Stephen Robinson took over shortly after, initiating a squad overhaul that saw players like Ambrose leave for Switzerland and Connor Ronan arrive from Colorado Rapids.
