El-Sayed's most notable achievements are academic. He is one of a small number of people to hold both an MD and a PhD in epidemiology, plus a second PhD in sociology from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship recognized him as a New American making significant contributions. His University of Michigan Distinguished Alumni Award honored his impact on public health and public service. While he has not won national political office, his two competitive primary campaigns for governor and U.S. Senate in a major swing state are themselves remarkable for a first-time candidate with no political dynasty behind him.
